All That Glitters with Margo Talbot
Women’s Alpine Adventure Club are honoured to welcome Margo Talbot to speak as part of our winter Alpine Stories series.
Margo is an ice climbing superstar based in Canmore, Canadian Rockies. However, Margo’s route to ice climbing guiding and success was not plain sailing.
In this talk Margo tells of rehabilitating from trauma, depression and addiction with her new found love of ice climbing. Tony Robbin’s quote ‘your life changes in a moment’ applies not to Margo’s rock bottom moment in a jail cell, but to when she was taken ice climbing for the first time 2 weeks before she was arrested. Margo realised that the outdoors was what she needed - fresh air, repetitive activity of ice climbing and a new start with a different community.
Margo shares her story of a journey out of the depths of depression and drug addiction and into the mountains and a new passion of ice climbing. Join us as we visit the Rockies and Antarctica with Margo sharing little seen shots of her time guiding expeditions, plus stories of working with Chicks with Picks and her role model Kitty Calhoun.
Margo’s book ‘All That Glitters: A Climbers Journey through Addiction and Depression’ is a compelling read and expands on many of the stories that were shared in this talk. A highly recommended read! Margo has also started a Facebook group - Glitter Girls Climb (http://www.facebook.com/groups/glittergirlsclimb) which will be a fantastic resource around ice climbing gear, techniques and knowledge. We are super excited to be scheming with Margo about future plans - watch this space!
