Alpine Vagabonds with Priti Wright
To kick off the Winter Series of Alpine Stories, we welcome Priti Wright - one half of the ‘Alpine Vagabonds’. Priti and her husband Jeff are drawing to the end of a year long sabbatical from their usual full time jobs. 2 years in the planning, they did not expect a global pandemic to impact their plans!
Despite travel restrictions, lockdowns and last minute alterations to plans, Priti and Jeff completed a fantastic list of mountaineering objectives cumulating in the first ascent of K6 Central in the Karakorum, Pakistan.
In this talk Priti outlines the process of embarking on a sabbatical, with the necessary planning, decision making and logistics and then just going and doing it! Priti was given the push to commit to the sabbatical after watching a TED Talk and realising the time is now! Are you thinking about taking some time out to persue your climbing goals? Priti advises you to go for it, and have a range of goals to stretch yourself. The first ascent of K6 Central was one of their BHAGs (watch the talk to find out what this stands for!!).
Full of inspiring photos and commentary, this talk makes you feel that anything is possible and that the weekend warrior way of life can lead to towards your biggest goals.
The talk begins with a fantastic weather window of climbing down in Patagonia. You can read Priti’s account of climbing Cerro Torre here. Priti then goes on to tell us about the 6 north faces of the European Alps and how they managed to stay fit and motivated whilst only being allowed within 1km of their rented apartment in Chamonix. After some watchful waiting of the travel conditions and weather in Pakistan, they decided to continue with this part of their trip.
Watch the full video to hear about the logistics of attempting an unclimbed peak, basecamp stories with Colin Haley and the wilderness of the Karakorum. We feel so privileged to have Priti give this presentation for WAAC and look forward to hearing more about her future adventures!
